African cities dominated the 2018 list of least liveable cities in the world with seven mentions out of ten.
The survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranked 140 cities on factors, including political and social stability, crime, education and access to healthcare.
Nigerian city of Lagos (138), Zimbabwe’s Harare (135) were among the top list of least liveable cities.
Other African countries on that list are Libya’s Tripoli (134), Cameroon’s Douala (133), Algiers in Algeria (132) and Senegal’s Dakar (131).
Syria’s war-torn capital, Damascus (140) ranked top of the list of least liveable cities.
In the 2018 Global Liveability Index 2018, Vienna displaced Melbourne as the most liveable city in the world.
There was some good news for Africa though with Johannesburg gaining a rank of 86. It was the most liveable African city.
The EIU says cities in the Middle East, Africa and Asia account for the ten-lowest scoring cities where “violence, whether through crime, civil insurgency, terrorism or war, has played a strong role”.
