Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has sacked all workers in a unit of the country’s heath Ministry over claims of corruption.
The staff are accused of mismanagement of public resources with reports of more workers likely to also suffer similar fate.
The East African reports that some of the staff sacked could face prosecution. Those sacked work in the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) that oversees medical and healthcare services.
The decision was taken on Wednesday after a cabinet meeting chaired by President Kagame.
The Rwanda Biomedical Centre handles issues relating to infrastructure and medical equipment hospitals in the country.
A statement on the issue reads that “The Cabinet meeting removed from duties all the staff from Medical Technology and Infrastructure Division [at RBC] due to inefficiencies affecting the performance of the health sector.”
The latest move is part of efforts by President Kagame to fight corruption in Rwanda.
Recent reports by the country’s Auditor-General showed high level of corruption by some public agencies including the health sector.
