Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has launched a space agency for the country.
The Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZNGSA) was launched alongside other projects the government says will modernize the country.
The Herald reports that the space agency will be enhancing agriculture, mineral exploration, wildlife conservation, disease surveillance and mapping.
President Mnangagwa says “This programme is expected to enhance Zimbabwe’s capabilities in global policy discourses on generation, access, use and regulation of the application of space technologies.”
“I challenge all stakeholders in this field to take advantage of our engagement and re-engagement policy.
This launch signals in practical terms the usefulness of research, development and innovation in solving real life problems” Mnangagwa said.
President Mnangagwa who took over from Robert Mugabe has promised to transform the fortunes of the Southern African nation.
He has prioritized dealing with corruption and making his country friendly to investors. This is part of efforts to fix its economy.
Impending elections
President Mnangagwa will be seeking to be retained as president in this month’s elections in Zimbabwe.
Mnangagwa who is leading the Zanu-PF into the elections has campaigned promising new focus for the country.
His rival Nelson Chamisa of the opposition MDC is also pledging to revive the economy that has taken a nose dive.
Chamisa doesn’t think Mnangagwa holds the key to taking Zimbabwe to the next level.
The elections are crucial since that will be first time Zimbabweans will be voting without former president Mugabe participating.
