Thousands of Guineans have been protesting hikes in fuel prices. Protests have been taking place in the capital, Conakry, against 25% rise in fuel prices.
The government has refused to subsidize prices of petroleum products. Guineans want original prices of $0.88 (8,000 Guiean francs) per litre maintained.
The new prices came into effect at the pump last week but the government is restrained from spending money in subsidizing.
There are indications the decision not to subsidize is due to obligations the government had to meet for entering into a program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The government says maintaining original prices for fuel will mean it has to spend millions of dollars on subsidies.
Protests getting chaotic
On Monday agitations got chaotic in Conakry following a general strike.
Police also clashed with demonstrators who threw rocks at police in Kissosso, a southern suburb.
AFP reports that riot police responded to the attacks from the protesters with teargas.
Some roads were blocked by the protesters who are demanding a resolution to the crisis.
