A woman has been found alive in a morgue fridge in South Africa after paramedics declared her dead.

The woman was involved in a car accident last month outside of Carletonville, southwest of Johannesburg and declared dead. But emergency services said on Monday that she is alive.

The unnamed woman was certified dead by paramedics at the scene of the accident, according to Ambulance service Distress Alert.

Distress Alert operations manager Gerrit Bradnick told AFP that “We followed our procedures – we’ve got no idea how it happened.”

‘Awake from death’

Local media reports that Mortuary technicians after several hours discovered that the woman was alive.

One of the technicians upon second check inside the morgue fridge realized that the woman was still breathing.

Bradnick says “The crew is absolutely devastated – we’re not in the business of declaring living people dead.”

“We’re in the business of keeping people alive. All the right checks were done – breathing, pulse – so the patient was declared deceased,” he said.

Negligence or Miracle?

Ambulance service Distress Alert says officials at the morgue where the woman was found alive are in shock.

The company has launched an investigation into the incident.

Bradnick however told TimesLive that there was “no proof of any negligence. This did not happen because our paramedics are not properly trained.”

A new trend?

In 2011 a 50-year-old man also woke up screaming in an Eastern Cape morgue in South Africa.

In 2016 an accident victim was also declared dead in Kwazulu Natal but was found alive hours later.
