African leaders are meeting in Mauritania for the 31st African Union summit aimed at finding ways to deal with corruption.

The leaders want to effectively tackle corruption which immensely thwarts the growth of the continent.

Also on the agenda is the issue of peace and security. The aim of the summit will be to find new ways of improving peace and security in most of the member countries.

The summit opened on Sunday and ends on Monday in Mauritania’s capital, Nouakchott.

Need to tackle corruption

According to the African Union, over 70 percent of the continent’s wealth is diverted by leaders who are corrupt.

The trend deprives the continent of adequate resourced for developmental projects to improve lives of its people.

The heads of state will have to find a mechanism to return stolen money, largely placed in tax havens countries abroad.

Promoting free trade will also feature on the agenda as the Union hopes to make progress on the topic.

Thirty heads of state are attending the summit chaired by the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame.
