Officials in Nigeria have uncovered at least 257 illegal orphanages in the country’s Imo State.

The orphanages tagged as illegal baby factories are engaged in selling babies illegally for profit.

News Express reports that hundreds of babies were rescued from these children’s home.

Imo State authorities say the discovering is part of efforts to eliminate illegal orphanages.

Special Assistant to the Imo State governor, Reverend Simeon Nwulu, is quoted as saying that only 15 of the 272 social homes in the state were legal.

Profiting from babies

Two months ago Nigerian officials rescued over 100 babies from orphanages operating illegally in Lagos state.

Local media reported that such facilities also house pregnant women who give birth and have their babies sold for profit.

Lagos state Commissioner for Youths and Social Development Agboola Dabiri at the time revealed that about 162 children were involved in the latest incident.

“To ensure protection for children we have shut three illegal orphanages homes. Of these, one operates as baby factory while two others were unregistered homes,” Dabiri said.
