South African bus drivers have reached a deal with the government over their wage demands and decided to end their ongoing strike.
The drivers will receive a 9% wage increase for the first year and 8% for the second year, according to Fin24 with further details signalling that the offer will be backdated to April 17 when the drivers embarked on the strike.
The workers were demanding a backtracking of their upgraded wages to April 1.
They are expected to resume work on Tuesday but some of the drivers say they would only return to work when the necessary documentations over the agreement is signed by both parties.
More than 17 000 drivers, ground transport services joined the strike which affected transportation in many cities across the country, leaving commuters stranded.
The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union, the Transport and Allied Workers Union of South Africa, the Transport and Omnibus Workers Union, the National Union of Mineworkers of South Africa and the Tirisano Transport and Services Workers Union supported the strike action.
