Members of a notorious Nigerian gang, trafficking women and girls into Europe for prostitution have been arrested by police in Spain.
The operation has led to the rescue of 39 women and girls who were smuggled in from Nigeria and sold into sex work.
The women and girls trafficked, according to Europol were kept in “squalid conditions in caves” and threatened with voodoo.
Police say 89 people have been arrested with investigations showing that a prominent DJ from Nigeria helped move the victims to Spain for sexual exploitation.
The victims were to work as prostitutes to pay off a 30,000 euro debt.
A BBC investigation recently triggered a probe after an underage victim filed a complaint with the police over the operations of this gang.
Police in UK and Nigeria conducted a special operation, with 41 house searched in 11 Spanish cities and one city in the UK.
One of Nigeria’s major groups, the Eiye brotherhood is said to have links to the trafficking gang.
Bank accounts reportedly used for transfer of 300,000 euros have now blocked.
There is a high number of young people in Africa desperate to travel to Europe for better living conditions and often fall victim to people who exploit them after promising them goodies and jobs.
