A former President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy is facing questioning over allegations that he received campaign funding from the late Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.
Mr. Sarkozy has reportedly been taken into police custody for questioning as the Police investigate some irregularities over his finances during the 2007 presidential campaign.
One of Mr Sarkozy’s former ministers and a close ally, Brice Hortefeux is also reported to have been questioned by police on Tuesday.
The former French President has in the past been questioned as part of the probe although he has denied any wrongdoing.
France in 2013 started probing the allegations that Mr. Sarkozy’s campaign benefited from illicit funds from Gaddafi.
Mr. Sarkozy after questioning could appear before a judge and may face charges, according to French media. Possible charges in this case would be influence peddling, fraud, handling of stolen goods and money laundering.
Muammar Gaddafi was toppled in the 2011 and was killed in the hands of Libyan rebel forces.
Libya since Gaddafi’s overthrow has become a hub for slave trade as Africans hoping to cross the Mediterranean into Europe are subjected to inhumane treatments and sold in slave markets.
