The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that his government has been able to recover over $250 million state funds stolen by some public officials.
The Zimbabwean leader during his swearing in as President last year issued an amnesty for state stolen funds to be returned by the end of February this year, a deadline that has already expired.
In a message posted on his twitter page, President Mnangagwa said “with regards to the amnesty, I granted moratorium of 90 days, I am very thankful for the comments you are making on this issue. I would like to however explain that we have identified over a thousand cases.”
The Zimbabwean leader who promised to fight corruption and fix the country’s economy said these over thousand cases “require attention and we have so far processed a number of these cases.”
He said the processing of these cases has “resulted in us recovering $250 million back into the country” adding that “so many cases on a daily basis are being processed case by case”.
The government of Zimbabwe has already revealed the setting up of special courts to deal with corruption cases.
President Mnangagwa who took over from former President Robert Mugabe after a military takeover said in his message on twitter that “I have given reserve bank extra 14 days in order to process most of the cases that are positive”
He further warned that he would publish names of those refusing to heed to his call saying ” however to those who have not responded or ignored my call to return assets and funds of Zimbabwe, I say to them on 19th March, I will expose them by publishing their names.”
Zimbabwe which is still under foreign sanctions is struggling to mobilize funds to fix its ailing economy.
