Public University lecturers in Kenya on Thursday re-activated a nationwide strike nearly three months after ending a similar protest over low pay.
The lecturers said in a statement that they are also demanding services like car loans and higher quality medical insurance which are available to other public servants.
“The union has exhausted all the possible options that were available to prevent the industrial action,” the Universities’ Academic Staff Union said in the statement.
The lecturers ended a similar strike in December last year after reaching an agreement with the government for a rise in salaries.
Public sector workers in Kenya often embark on strike usually over salaries, as they blame the government for failing to fulfill promises made to them.
The government has said that lack of adequate funds has made it difficult to satisfy the demands of every public sector worker.
The government of President Uhuru Kenyatta has also been accused of failing to curb widespread corruption which has made it difficult to raise enough funds to pay workers well.
