Despite been sacked by his former boss and eventually taking over from him after a military takeover, President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that former leader Robert Mugabe did no wrong while in office.
Mnangagwa rather maintains that those the former president surrounded himself with were the ones who took advantage of him and usurped his powers.
The Zimbabwean leader was asked by a Russian media Sputnik news agency whether there were any mistakes Mugabe made that he would not want to repeat and Mnangagwa replied: “No, the president never made any mistakes.”
Mnangagwa who clashed with former first lady Grace Mugabe said “We were having persons (other than the president) who were making executive decisions, which is against the constitution of the country,”
Mnangagwa told Sputnik that “hundreds and hundreds of thousands” had marched in support of the military takeover in protest against this”.
“Our people reacted to people usurping power, which is not given to them by the constitution, so this was corrected by the masses of Zimbabwe,” he added.
Zimbabwe’s economy is struggle with Mnangagwa appealing for economic sanctions imposed on the country during the Mugabe era to be lifted.
He has promised to hold free and fair elections assuring that observers across the world are welcomed to visit the southern African nation to witness the poll.
