A South African politician’s husband has appeared in court for faking a hijacking incident.

Vusi Dlakude, who is husband to the ANC deputy chief whip Doris Dlakude, appeared in court on Tuesday on a charge of perjury, according to News24.

Vusi Dlakude appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court in connection with allegations he called his wife, claiming that he had been hijacked.

Police however said further investigation revealed that Dlakude may have faked the hijacking.

He is also being investigated for additional charges after the alleged discovery of a hunting rifle in his car.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi in a media statement said that “After the police realised that the information of” Dlakude, 49 “did not tally, they arrested him for perjury”.
