The controversial business family in South Africa, the Guptas are being investigated by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations over possible U.S links
The Financial Times reported on Thursday that the FBI opened an investigation into U.S. links to the Guptas, an action seen to be a further escalating of the scandal that has gripped the business family.
The Guptas are business friends of South Africa’s President, Jacob Zuma and have been accused of securing government contracts due to their relationship with Mr. Zuma.
The FBI is reported to be looking at individuals, bank accounts and companies in the U.S. for ties to alleged corrupt deals involving the Guptas.
A senior United Kingdom politician on Wednesday said that banks in the UK may have been used to launder money stolen from South Africa.
The former cabinet minister, Lord Peter Hain has in a letter alleged that a South African whistle-blower claimed that the banks “maybe inadvertently have been conduits for the corrupt proceeds of money”.
The said money laundering accusation focused on alleged ties South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma and the business family, the Guptas.
