The new president of Angola Joao Lourenco on Tuesday was sworn in at a ceremony in the country’s capital Luanda after his ruling party, the MPLA won general elections last month.
Joao Lourenco a former defence minister now takes over from Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, who had ruled for 38 years.
Lourenco read an oath vowing to “devote myself” to the role of president.
Former President Jose Eduardo dos Santos announced his decision to step down in February this year but is expected to retain control of the ruling party.
Dos Santos, aged 74, had reneged on similar pledges during his rule with his opponents doubting his announcement to quit.
He is married to former model and air hostess Ana Paula, 18 years his junior. Dos Santos has been accused of trying to build a family dynasty to control Angola beyond his lifespan.
