Kenya’s President, Uhuru Kenyatta has spoken angrily about the nullification of his electoral victory by the country’s Supreme Court on Friday and has vowed to “deal with” the Judiciary.
He told a rally of party supporters, governors and members of the county assemblies at State House in Nairobi that he will fix the judiciary when re-elected.
The Supreme Court nullified Mr. Kenyatta’s re-election on August 8 ordering fresh election within 60 days after ruling that his re-election did not meet constitutional requirement of Kenya.
“Even if you are so stupid, ask yourself something, the people elected an MCA, results were transmitted, and no one asked questions. Those of MPs and senators were transmitted, and no one asked questions and they have been sworn in,” Kenyatta said.
Speaking in an angry tone President Kenyatta said “We shall revisit this thing. We clearly have a problem” he said as he further questioned the actions of the judges saying “Who even elected you? Were you? We have a problem and we must fix it.”
Kenyatta went further to say that “The Supreme Court sat and decided that they are the ones with a bigger power than the 15 million Kenyans who woke up, queued in lines, and voted for their preferred presidential candidate. As a Supreme Court, they cannot annul the wishes of the people. And we will revisit this thing.”
The vice president, William Ruto also attacked the judges saying “When this is done, we shall interrogate everything, how a Supreme Court overturned the will of Kenyans on the basis of things that have nothing to do with how they voted, on some technicality. Hiyo ni upuzi (That is stupidity).”
Meanwhile the opposition leader, Raila Odinga has also called for the resignation of the officials at the electoral commission and wants them to be prosecuted following the court’s ruling.
