Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has announced that his government is negotiating for the release of the Chibok girls still in captivity.
In a statement Mr. Buhari said the ongoing talks will ensure that the over 190 girls still in captive will gain their freedom.
His assurance to parents of these girls was made on Thursday as Nigerians mark three years since 276 schoolgirls were kidnapped by the militant group Boko Haram.
“Government is in constant touch through negotiations, through local intelligence to secure the release of the remaining girls and other abducted persons unharmed,” President Buhari said in the statement.
In October, Boko Haram freed 21 of around 220 girls they kidnapped in April 2014 from the northern town of Chibok following mediation by Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
Others have escaped or been rescued.
