Nigeria’s upper house parliament president, Bukola Saraki is coming under investigations over alleged attempts to evade customs duties on a car.
Should Mr. Saraki be found guilty after investigations, he could be impeached.
Parliamentarians on Tuesday voted to allow for an enquiry into the matter involving someone who is Nigeria’s third most senior official.
Reuters reported that Mr. Saraki still faces charges of falsely declaring his assets when he was a state governor from 2003 to 2011, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
The current charge of attempts to evade duties was first made public by newspaper reports which claimed that Saraki failed to pay import duties of $240,650 on a bulletproof car belonging to him.
He has however denied any wrong doing.
A senator who raised the motion to investigate Saraki, Ali Ndume is quoted as saying “”We refer the matter to ethics and privileges (committee) to investigate, so that our colleagues would be cleared and this senate will stand as it supposed to,”
Saraki’s spokesman, Yusuph Olaniyonu said “The allegation lacks basis as it was outright falsehood”.
Investigations are expected to be completed within four weeks.
