Morocco is reported to have applied to join the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Kuwait News agency reported that the application was made on Friday.
On its website, KUNA reported that the application from Morocco has been submitted to the chairperson of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
In a statement the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the submission of the application to join ECOWAS to the Liberian president.
Morocco recently was re-admitted to the African Union after exiting the continental body over three decades ago.
Member states voted by majority decision to re-admit Morocco at its last Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The King of Morocco, Mohammad VI recently embarked on series of visits to many ECOWAS member states seen by many analysts as an attempt to solidify relations with the regional bloc.
ECOWAS was founded on May 28, 1975 and so far has 15-members with the bloc’s aim to promote economic integration, foster the idea of collective self-sufficiency and create a common market.
Its member countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’ Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Togo.
