Police in Nigeria have clashed with Shia Muslim sect northern city, Kano, BBC Africa reports. 

The BBC reported that a journalist travelling with the minority Shia group its reporter that many of the followers were shot by the police.

Some of the members of the Muslim sect are feared dead in the clash. An eyewitness told the BBC that he saw a police vehicle conveying victims of the attack. 

Meanwhile the AFP news agency is reporting at least 10 deaths, though this has not been confirmed.

The Nigerian Police command has confirmed the clashes. The main road into Kano from the south and the capital, Abuja, has been blocked.
